Summary

The Adversary is the fourth and final instalment in Julian May’s Saga of Pliocene Exile. The story is set six million years in the past, during the Pliocene Epoch, where humans have fled from their future to escape societal constraints. These exiles find themselves entangled in the power struggles of two alien races: the Tanu and the Firvulag. The narrative centres on Aiken Drum, a cunning and ambitious human who has risen to become King of the Many-Coloured Land. However, his rule is threatened by the prophecy of the Nightfall War, a cataclysmic battle between the Tanu and Firvulag factions.

Marc Remillard, known as “The Adversary,” emerges as a pivotal figure. A former exile and metapsychic genius, Marc returns to Europe to prevent his children from reopening the Time Gate, which could allow escape back to the 22nd century. Marc’s journey intertwines with Elizabeth Orme, a Metapsychic Grandmaster who is working to cure black-torc babies—infants unable to adapt to the mind-enhancing torcs used by the Tanu.

The book explores themes of power, morality, and identity as characters grapple with their roles in shaping humanity’s future. The conclusion ties together the fates of key characters while leaving some questions open for readers to ponder.
